How this calculator works

Use this time card calculator to total the hours on your weekly time card and estimate gross pay. Enter the hours worked each day, your hourly rate, and your overtime rules — hours above the weekly threshold are paid at the overtime multiplier. If you track clock-in and clock-out times rather than daily totals, the Punch Clock Calculator handles a single shift and the Timesheet Calculator handles a full week of shift times.

Worked example

An employee who works 8 hours Monday through Friday and 4 hours on Saturday enters 44 total hours for the week. With overtime after 40 hours at time-and-a-half and a $20 hourly rate, that is 40 regular hours and 4 overtime hours: (40 × $20) + (4 × $20 × 1.5) = $800 + $120 = $920 in gross pay.

Common mistakes

  • Entering clock-in and clock-out times instead of hours worked — this calculator takes daily hour totals. For shift start and end times, use the Punch Clock Calculator or the Timesheet Calculator.
  • Including unpaid lunch breaks in the daily hours, which inflates the weekly total.
  • Applying the overtime multiplier to all hours instead of only the hours above the threshold.
  • Mixing pay periods, such as entering two weeks of hours against a weekly overtime threshold.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate total hours from a time card?

Add the hours worked for each day of the week. If you worked 8 hours Monday through Friday and 4 on Saturday, the weekly total is 44 hours. Enter the seven daily totals above and the calculator sums them, then splits regular and overtime hours and estimates gross pay.

What is the difference between a time card calculator and a timesheet calculator?

A time card calculator takes the hours worked each day as its input. A timesheet calculator takes clock-in and clock-out times plus breaks and derives the hours. Use the time card version when you already know your daily hours; use the Timesheet Calculator when you only have shift start and end times.

How is overtime calculated on a time card?

Hours above the weekly threshold are multiplied by the hourly rate and the overtime multiplier, then added to regular pay. With a 40 hour threshold, time-and-a-half, and a $20 rate, 44 weekly hours give (40 × $20) + (4 × $20 × 1.5) = $920. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, covered nonexempt employees earn at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours beyond 40 in a week; some states and employers use different rules.

Do unpaid lunch breaks count on a time card?

No. Enter only hours actually worked — subtract unpaid lunch and break time before entering the daily total. Paid rest breaks count as work time. When in doubt, match what your employer treats as paid time.
