Formula Used

Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 324. Tons = cubic yards × stone density. Bags = ceil(cubic yards × 27 ÷ 0.5).

Notes

Yards price by bulk suppliers can be delivered or picked up; densities vary by stone, so pick the closest type or enter tons directly from the supplier quote.

How this calculator works

Gravel suppliers sell by the cubic yard while delivery is priced by the ton, and garden centers sell bags by the cubic foot — three different units for one purchase. This gravel calculator takes the length, width, and depth of your area and returns all three: cubic yards from the standard volume formula, tons using the density of the stone type you pick, and how many 0.5 cubic foot bags that equals. Density runs about 1.2 tons per yard for light pea gravel up to 1.6 for dense limestone, with 1.4 tons per yard as the all-purpose default for crushed stone.

Formula

Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 324. Tons = cubic yards × stone density. Bags = ceil(cubic yards × 27 ÷ 0.5).

Worked example

A 20 by 10 foot driveway section at 2 inches deep covers 200 square feet. The volume is 200 × 2 ÷ 324 = 1.23 cubic yards. At the default density of 1.4 tons per yard that is 1.73 tons. Buying bagged at 0.5 cubic feet each would take 67 bags — at $6 a bag that is over $400, while 1.73 tons of bulk gravel at $45 per ton is about $78, so bulk is the clear choice for anything bigger than a path.

Notes

Common mistakes

  • Confusing tons with yards. A cubic yard of gravel weighs roughly 1.2 to 1.6 tons depending on stone type, so a supplier quote in tons and a landscaper quote in yards are not directly comparable.
  • Underestimating depth for driveways. A 2 inch top-up is fine over an existing base, but a new driveway usually needs a 4 to 6 inch compacted base plus a top layer.
  • Ignoring compaction and settling. Loose gravel settles 10 to 15 percent — order a little extra for driveways that take vehicle weight.
  • Buying bags for a driveway-sized job. Bags are for paths and patches; anything over a yard or two should be ordered bulk by the ton.

Frequently asked questions

How much gravel do I need for a driveway?

Multiply the driveway area in square feet by the depth in inches and divide by 324 for cubic yards, then multiply by stone density for tons. A 20 by 10 foot section at 2 inches deep is 1.23 cubic yards or 1.73 tons. New driveways need a 4 to 6 inch compacted base, not just a top layer.

How many tons is a cubic yard of gravel?

About 1.2 tons for light pea gravel, 1.4 tons for typical crushed stone, and up to 1.6 tons for dense limestone. The calculator defaults to 1.4 tons per yard — pick your stone type from the menu for a closer number, or confirm with your supplier.

How many bags of gravel are in a cubic yard?

At 0.5 cubic feet per standard bag, one cubic yard equals 54 bags before rounding up. For anything over a bag or two, bulk by the yard or ton is dramatically cheaper.

What is the difference between pea gravel and crushed stone?

Pea gravel is smooth, rounded stone that shifts underfoot — good for decorative beds and paths. Crushed stone has angular edges that lock together under compaction, which is why it is preferred for driveways and bases. Crushed stone also weighs a bit more per yard.

How deep should gravel be for a driveway?

A new driveway typically needs 4 to 6 inches of compacted base gravel plus a 2 to 3 inch top layer of finer stone. A 2 inch layer alone works only as a top-up over an existing solid base.
